Intro

In my 10+ years of experience in the engineering industry, I have seen many different things. Through many projects, consulting and advising, I’ve seen good culture and I have also seen how bad culture looks like.

One thing in common that every bad culture had was the culture of blame. Whenever I came to that particular project, I had the feeling of people being afraid of saying things out loud or making mistakes. This has then been the root cause of so many other underlying issues.

Me, personally, especially at the beginning of my career, I have gone into blaming too many times as well. Let’s get into that next!

Growing in my career as an engineer and later as an engineering leader, I have found myself too many times going straight into blaming. It’s so easy to run “git blame” and try to find the person who was responsible for introducing certain code.
