My overview of different org structures and what worked best from my experience!
Intro
I’ve seen so many different structures of organizations and teams over 11+ years in the engineering industry and it can be quite confusing which one is the best to take.
I have been a direct part of organizations and teams and also did numerous advisings and consultations with founders and engineering leaders from different companies.
I am happy to share my opinion on different structures I came across and which worked best for me.

Every company is different, so it’s important to choose what’s best in your case
I’ll be as much opinionated as I can, but it’s always great to look at what structure fits best for your case and what kind of vision and culture you have in the company. There are many variables here:
The business and the industry
The short-term and long-term goals
Overall vision and the culture of the company + knowledge and expertise of people inside the company
Whenever you are creating the structure of the org, this is always very important to keep in mind:
Doing what is the best for the business is always going to be the right way of looking at it. At the end of the day, engineering is here in support of the business not the other way around!
