Intro

A lot of engineers neglect the value of sharing knowledge. For me, if an engineer is actively helping others and regularly sharing their knowledge, that’s one of the biggest indicators of high performance.

The bigger the organization, the more important it is to do that and the bigger impact you can have. Imagine if you help 100 or 1000 people to level up and make them 10% better. The value you bring is immense.

And a great way you can actively have that kind of impact is by organizing an engineering guild.

What is this guild, you ask? We’ll get into that next!

But before we do, it’s important to mention that this article is for paid subscribers, and here is the full index:

What is an engineering guild?

An engineering guild is a group of individuals with similar expertise on a specific technology or set of technologies.

These individuals are part of different cross-functional teams and meet regularly to share knowledge and align on guidelines, approaches or specific implementation details.

A guild can be general for Frontend or Backend or specific for a certain technology like React or GraphQL, etc. It’s up to the organization and individuals to determine what works best.

Anyone can join the guild and the meetings, but one person takes ownership of being the organizer and leading the meetings.

That person doesn’t need to be the most senior individual, but someone with determination and drive to share knowledge and strive for continuous improvements.

A person who volunteers and does a great job at it will automatically be seen as someone who is focusing on sharing knowledge and making things better across the org, which as you know is quite impactful.

If you do that, this will help your career substantially.
