Thank you for the opportunity to partner on this important career topic Gregor. Always a pleasure collaborating with you. I hope the community here finds this valuable.
Appreciate you for sharing your insights with us Omar! This will help a lot of people. It would be especially helpful to me when I was a Sr. SE -> not knowing which career path should I pursue!
Having a plan and long-term strategy helps us navigate through life, career and move forward in the right direction. It's like having a guiding north star. Without it, we're doomed to wander around.
You absolutely need a career growth plan and not many people know how to create them. I'd add a couple of things:
Once you've set your SMART goals, you need a system to make sure you get on with them (a tick sheet or a spreadsheet)
Your manager might not know how to help you with your career growth, so you have to learn how to do it yourself.
If you're aspiring to a promotion, check out the position descriptions of the job you want, work out where you need to build your skills, set about getting those skills.
